British law to include Sharia.

As an atheist and someone that feel strongly about the separation of church and state, I find news telling me that the inclusion of religious laws in public law worrisome. While I understand the argument made by Dr William that it is a cultural thing and would serve to help the Muslim immigrant to integrate into the country, I fear that it is a dangerous precedent. Remember that British law is based on a system of precedent and allowing part of a religious text to be used at law for one thing set the possibility to argue that another part could be used. Pretty sound you find that your old law system, as been mostly replace by the religious law and you are a theocracy. Now I don’t think such a problem is likely in America since we have a strong laic influence in our law system. However if Britain was to adopt it, it might become an argument to adopt it in Canada. Not to mention that if Britain was to become a theocracy it might be a prelude to a holy crusade with one of the world major military power as its instigator, not a though I like to contemplate.

My question is: if the Sharia was to be adopted there, couldn't you pretend to be a muslim to apply some of the laws in your favor, which you couldn't apply in other circumstances? I am no muslim specialist but I am always worried about stuff like beating your wife. I suppose many muslims don't believe in such practices but many occidental people (including christians and catholics) believe in beating woman so where is the limit between having right to do it or not? Very very worrying. I heard the prime minister of Australia said the immigrants should know very well the places where they want to move so that they know what their living conditions should be. If you don't like the laic governments, stay were you are!!! This was my yearly racist comment... I would say the same to any catholic person who would say I don't have the same civilian rights as theirs because I am divorced and living unmarried with another man! "Et vlan dans les dents"

Well from what I understand of the archbishop proposal, it would only be civil law that would be affected not criminal law. So in short it would still be illegal to beat your wife but to divorse her you could go to the Sharia court and follow Muslim precept for the divorce. I wonder tho how it would work if one wants to go to the Sharia and the other wants to go to the civil court...

I think the Netherland have a simillar policy toward immigration. They show prospective immigran a video of how things are in the Netherland and what is accepted in society. Then the prospective immigran has to sign that he accept those are the living condition in the Netherland and those are the thing you have to accept if you choose to move there.
