So how was your chrismast?

Well thanks for asking. What? you did not ask? no no I distinctively heard you and since it is my univers (what you don't belive that either? just look at the 345th star in NGC 4900 it right on it surface. what? your saying you can't read the surface of stars in galaxy 15 Million light years away? so that mean you have to trust me the astronomer here) I'm probably right.

So all in all it was a good christmas, I've had a party with a part of my familly I hadn't seen in 8 years because of a familly feud so it was pretty nice. it isn't the best christmas I've had but it was a pretty nice one. Also yesterday I got to see little J. Yeah stormcrow and piccolo paid me a little visit in their role of transporting unit for little J ;-) The little guy is really cute and fun and he like to laught a lot.

Yet another christmas blog

Well I would like to wish a merry christmas to all my reader and to everyone else for that matter just because you don't read my blog doesn't mean you can't have a merry christmas, it's a downer but you'll get over it ;-p Myself I'll use this holiday time to relax, relax and play WoW while relaxing ;-p hey it's my first vacation in a year!

On another note King Kong isn't that great. I saw it yesterday and I couldn't get into the movie things keep sending me back to the land of: but darn it that isn't even logical in the movie! Oh and I keep expecting Godzilla to show up and find with the monkey so that give you an idea of how many big prehistoric like monstre the monkey fight in the movie. It's entertaining but it could be way shorter then the 3 hours it now is.

No, I hadn't forgoten I had a blog. I have been... busy yeah that the word with finals and term paper and stuff yeah, mostly stuff. Well ok honestly I've been spending most of my free time WoWing so that explain why I haven't posted here. but now finally I am free! I have my first two week vacation in over a year so you will excuse me if I sleep late, play lots of WoW, party with my friends (as long as it isn't too expensive) and generally do nothing really productive during the holidays.

Oh yeah I don't have any ground breaking thoughs or anything like that at the moment so no post about it here. If you happen to have a ground breaking though please send it to me so that I can post something a little more meaning full then an excuse as to why I didn't post.

A short post

I've been very busy with my end of semester rush, but this morning while reading the news online I came upon this article. Read it and then read on please.

Now, if you are going to sue Blizzard over a kid that jump off a building because he "wanted" to reproduce something he did in game, we should also sue the kid physic teacher for failling to teach a boy that hitting the ground at hight speed can cause fatal injuries, the owner of the building for building something you can jump off and kill yourself, the parent of the kid for not noticing his suicidal tendancy and finally George W. Bush since it is fashionable to blame him. (BTW all this is sarcasm!).

All I've go to say is that we are trying to blame someone without trying to understand why the kid really did it.

Will changing party really change things?

Another political post, see I'm really wondering if there is a difference between party right now. Most of the decision are made by bureaucrates that will not change with the party in place, many things are set up years in advance in such way that if you cancel them it cost you more then if you let them run even if they where stupid idea. Sure during the campaign we might hear "different" ideas but tell me honestly and by thinking back on the previous party in power, where they really any different? I remember in Quebec (because 14 years is a little far to remember with the federal governement) about 2 years ago when the last provincial election came on. People where desperate to throw the PQ out of office they had been badly managing Quebec main issues of health care and negociation with their employees. So we elect the Liberal (provincial liberal with "no" association to the federal ones) and we get a governement that cannot manage the main issues of Quebec!

The more things changes hey? I am beging to wonder just how far and profound corruption is in Canada and Quebec and if the voting process isn't just a joke set to replace religions as the masses opium. I'm wondering who really profits from the billions spent by the governements and mostly I wonder why we as a people aren't more upset at not knowing.

Cold medecine questioning...

I was reading the ex-girlfriend project blog and this got me thinking, well that and the cold medecine I'm taking to get over my second cold/flu/sinus infection of the season (Strange that I almost never got sick when I was with my ex.) I asked myself a question have I ever being in love? Sound strange since I am pretty convinced I loved each and everyone of the girl I dated, each for her unique reason and in a unique way. It is strange how love can be so different but still be love. Still I ask myself now was I in love? what is really being in love? Why am I going so phylosophical this morning?

See I never really needed to ask that question (or so I though) I felt that I had being in love with all those girl (and some other but nothing ever come from this unreturned love) but for some reason while reading the ex-girlfriend project I found myself wondering if I had ever being truely in love and finding that I couldn't answer in a way that was convincing.

Oh well no sense getting all melodramatic on you, and since it might just be my old age showing I will return to wondering about it and see if I can post something else to see if I can distract you from my sappiness this morning.

The Asaathi party for common sense.

I was asked by an anonymous comments what would a party leaded by yours truly be like. Well I decided to answer this here and to warn you: I have no plan of ever starting a political life AND even if I did I would never get elected with this party (I'm sure after reading my "program" you'll understand why.) So without further warning let me beging:

FIRST my party will stand of the abolitions of political party and a reform of Canadian political system. What does that mean? First that I belive that the existance of political party is a big factor in the corruption of government. They make it possible for candiate to vote for laws and spending that are against their electors interess to further the party interest. The party interest are very simple: get enough money (or more) to be elected next election. By removing political party the only loyalty the deputy will have is to his own electors. However this will require at least ONE big change in the canadian political system, namely that the prime minister (who's office would not exist after my passage in it but more on that later) would be choosen in a vote from the chamber of deputy and would be suject to change without triggering an election.

SECOND my party will stand of the separation of the Canadian government from it's england roots. I would move for Canada to become a truely independant country to remove the offices that basically serve only to spend money and sign laws. The governor general? remove that, all the leutenant governor? remove those to! They have no real power, no real impact on society they are many office of tradition that tie us to a country thousan of km away that basically doesn't give a flying frack about us.

THIRD, my party would campaign to freeze investisment in health care and to reform health care in a way that we understand what is wrong with it, why spending billions mores each year does not bring a measurable increase in quality and quantity of treatement. We have in the past increased spending by 4 to 5 billions dollars almost each years and yet EVERY YEAR health care is juged to be underfunded. Tell me how can a 49 billions dollars health care system for a small 30 millions population can be underfunded? How can adding 4 billions to a 45 billion (almost a 10% increase!) can not change at least some things for the better? My opinion (without fact to back it up at the moment I must point out to be fair) is that we are now at a stage that there are so many administrator that to administrate the a new dollard in heath care it cost 1.2 dollars meaning that every dollard spend actually decrease the services the population receive.

FOURTH, In dept change to the military, the canadian military as out of date equipement, is too small for our country size and has (at least in Quebec) a public image that is falling toward Nazi soldier at the end of WWII level. Our military did great things, serving in our military is not a bad thing, not for killer and actually help around the world and the country. That means more money for the military, but also a clean up of the bullshitting and bureaucarties involved. I want the average canadian to be able to say: The canadian military is helping around the world and we are proud of it.

FIFTH, My biggest point I think I want to attack bureaucratic thinking, we do not need that much information on everyone, we do not need that many paper forms. We could first replace many by computer based form saving hundreds of tree each years. We would then reduce the quantity of information needed first off we do not need to know a person sexual orientation, religion, toothpast preference hell we only need basic information about someone. Name, date of birth, sex, social security number (which we know by definition since the governement hand them out), revenu (for tax purpose), martital status, address, and maybe one or two other thing I don't think about right now.

SIXTH, My party would look into wellfare service, It is unacceptable that people receive more then 1 monthly check from wellfare. It is unacceptable that a person can make a career out of being on wellfare. I do not plan on cuting wellfare on people that can work but don't but I think we should find a way to train and have these person work. I will make a point to say that I am only talking about the person who can work and choose not to. Not those that health problem prevent from working.

SEVENTH My party would not care about Quebec becoming indepent and being a distinct society, we would treat Quebec just as we would every other province. No special program to promotte Canada, no special consideration because it is a french speaking province, no special consideration because there is an independant mouvement. I would invest in Quebec as it is a province who's economy is slower then the other.

EIGHT, My party would stop the artificial support of entreprises. If an entreprise needs money EVERY years from the governement to stay in Canada and be profitable then it's probably only pocketing the money we give it. I'm all for helpig new business start, but I am not about to pay for every business to stay alive, we will give/lent money to start and maybe survive an hard hit to a particular market (like 9-11 on the travel industry) but do not expect us to keep you alive for years.

NINTH My party will change the way money is given to the art. We will be willing to give money to every artist but sucessfull artist will have to repaid this money. For exemple a show like star academy that received millions in subvention but made millions more from it would have to at least repaid half (if not all) the subvention money. The point of subvention for the art is to help artist not to give more money to already sucessfull producers and enterprises.

TENTH, My party take a long term ecological stance. I belive that it is impossible to solve pollution tomorrow, however we can work on the long term to break the habits that cause the most polution and to change the way we produce goods to eliminate pollution. Our law won't be a tomorrow affaire but will make sure that in a few years Canada is a clean country.

ELEVENTH, My party will adopt a logical clear and transparent stance on suject. Under our leadership, Canada would not sign a treaty again anti-personal mine while we are still the world largest producer of said mines. Under my party any deputy condamened of a crime or that admit commiting a crime would have to quit the party. We will not make promise we will not try to fufill and we will not offer excuse if we faill to fufill one. We will admit our fault and either try again or move on if it is impossible to fufill it.

Well here it is there are some other point notably on discrimination, salary that might warant being discussed here but I think you get my ideas, and probably understand why such a party will neve exist.

Never ask for wish from evil genies!

Well last night I had my tradiational nearly monthly Dungeon and Dragon game. All in all it was a great game, the players had fun I had fun. The battle where hard enought for them to sweat, they fought one with nearly all their spell exhausted, they where convinced or nearly so that they would die.

Their where exploring DM gift number 101, i.e a flying elf made castle that they could potentially capture for their own use. In this castle where trapped 4 rebelious noble djinni (evil noble djinni that where traped in the prime material plane after being captured by the djinni elfs allies). Now my party after breaking the magic circle agains evil, and detecting that the being traped is evil, proceeded to free the first djinni in exange for 2 wish (powerfull things you know...)they relatively quickly move to the second djinni and free him also. However being evil and all he attact them, after they manage to convince him to grant them wish in exange for life they make some wish... Long story short they free 3 of the 4 djinni before deciding to rest and finally realising that evil being corrupt the wish they grant. Finding themself struck with mummy rot and having none of their wish completly answer they decided to free the 4 djinni to solve the previously cause problem... you can guess the outcome. It was pretty funny even if they where not so thrilled about being tricked out of their wish again.

The often forgotten ones!

In my quest to find information that will help me vote for the best (instead as for the lesser evil) I used the src site to find exactly what are the other parties involved in this quest to be the one officially doing nothing to help the country for the next 4 to 5 years. So here they are in all there lack of glory the unsung parties!

[please note that the summaries provided are from reading 20 second on their web site they may not accuratly represent the parties. Then again they might.]

Canadian action party: We should put canade first in the international market, we need to be part of the world but still not part of it and keep our own everything but part of the world. Yeah that makes senses

Communist party of Canada: Succesfful communist regime throughtout history, 0. I guess that explain my view on their ideas

Christian Heritage party: Bring back the christian values to protect the fondation of our society.

Libertarian party: Reduce government power, the individual should have liberty. Reduce governement involvement in everything the individual will provide for himself and other if he wants to.

Marijuanna party: HEY DUDE!!!! LEGALISE POT! DUDE!

Communist party of Canada (Marxist-Leningist): see communist party of Canada

Progressive party of canada: The conservative before they joined the reformist.. don't recall how different they where? me neither.

Green party: the name says it all, environement, environement and environnement.

Well here are the unsung parties, think about voting for them maybe one of the is the best there is.

Not again!

[Disclaimer, the things say here are only opinion, form your own I'm just stating what I think, most is not based on fact and even if some fact might by random chance be at the base of my opinion they do not constitute proof or an attemps at discrimination, mainly I'm just expressing free speach and no I don't care about the correct spelling of the candidates name]

We are supposed to get 4 years periode of freedom, 4 years where we only hear of politician once in a while when they do something stupid or another, 4 years where even if nothing is really done to make things works correctly, existance continu and only the required one new lie a day is pronounced by politician. Now those 4 year we had garanteed by law have been shortened to 17 month! Yes, you know, you understand we canadian will once again have to decide who will direct our country toward financial catastrophe, well-fare cost increase, positively stupid political situation and genarally promoting delusional ideas. I will present to you the candidate:

First, our estimed former prime minister the very honorable but apparently completly blind and impossibily incompent as he couldn't as MINISTER OF FINANCE realise that his OWN people where fraudulusly using taxt payer money: Paul Martin!

Next, he who would like to be our next prime minister, with his abismal level charisma, lack of understanding of the issue Quebecer want to hear, large religious right-wing backing and lack of image management: Stephen Harper!

In third place we have mister smile, who's hope of being prime minister are about as likely to come true as my dream of walking on a planete orbiting Alpha Centaury: Jack Layton

And last, and really least, mister incoherence, who's agenda includes promoting the destruction of the federation on the federal level, doing absolutly nothing worth while while sitting at Ottawa since his party can only be, at best the official opposition in a very strong gouvernement and basicly complaining that Quebec is not special enought in the eye of Canada: Gilles Duccepte!

I think it is time to remove the liberal party from power and to pull the Bloc Quebecois back out of Otttawa but I seriously doubt that the opposition can pull it off. Stephen Harper lack the charisma required to be a people leader and Jack Layton as to convince people he can even win enough seat to form the opposition much less the governement. I fear our governement will be a Liberal majority and that we will continu with our current policy of doing weird thing that only serve to enrich those in power. Unfortunatly I am getting delusionated by the politician and people of Canada, we have not had a really new party in the last 50 years. We seem to fear new idea.. and I'm pretty sure that no matter who we elect it will be more of the same.

But do not think I will abstaint from voting, you can be sure that on january 23 I will be voting, I don't know yet for who but at least I will vote and hope that my vote will make a difference for the better.

[D20] Evasion

This post is about a mecanic that slightly annoys me in the D20 system the evasion ability of the rogue/roguish character. For those not playing and sill interested in the post evasion work with the reflex save and spell or effect that only give half their usual damage on a successful save. With the evasion ability you completly dodge the effect (and latter with the improved evasion you only get half damage with a failled save). This is a way too powerfull ability in my opinion, so I decide for my D20 modern game to change it to this: character now may have the Evasion: x ability where x is an amount of damage they substract in addition to half damage on a successfull save. Beyond x= 30 you can have the improved evasion:x ability that give yous no damage on a sucessufll save and substract x damage from the full damage on a failled save. In the D&D universe that would probably be too much of a nerf for hight level rogue vs high lvl caster but since the damage potential of caster and equipement will be lower in my D20 modern game it should fit just fine and be more logicial (in my not so humble opinion).

Not getting any telescope time(again)

I got a answer from the Canadien time allocation commitee yesterday about my telescope time request at Gemini. As you probably guess from the title I did not get any time, at all. To add insult to the injury the time allocation comitee made some comments on my proposal that just made me want to scream and simply throw all my phd research out the windows and start painting for a living (and I can't paint!). I reconsidered rapidly but I'd like to take a few moment to express my view of those comments and not this whole process below:

Complain he says!

Today once again the bus I take to school was full, and when I say full I mean that there where people standing and that you barely had place to breath. Now that would not be so terrible except for the fact that this bus goes on the to highway and travel there for over 10 minutes at speed over 100km/h. If a collision would happen well lets just say that I was lucky I would only be gravely injured, but more probably standing up in such a crash would be a death sentence. Now just before the first stop, the driver stood up and told people that this situation was unacceptable but that he and the other driver couldn't do much, it was up to us the public to complain of the danger and condition of the bus.

So basically we have to complain so that the bus compagnie rectify something they know is dangerous. Joy, well let me go and complain and hope I do not receive standard answer: "well you are the only one complaining sir."

The Pysicist's Bill of Rights[author unknown]

We hold these postulates to be intuitively obvious, that all physicists are born equal, to a first approximation, and are endowed by their creator with certain discrete privileges, among them a mean rest life, n degrees of freedom, and the following rights which are invariant under all linear transformations:

  1. To approximate all problems to ideal cases.
  2. To use order of magnitude calculations whenever deemed necessary (i.e. whenever one can get away with it).
  3. To use the rigorous method of "squinting" for solving problems more complex than the addition of positive real integers.
  4. To dismiss all functions which diverge as "nasty" and "unphysical".
  5. To invoke the uncertainty principle when confronted by confused mathematicians, chemists, engineers, psychologists, dramatists, and other lower scientists.
  6. When pressed by non-physicists for an explanation of (4) to mumble in a sneering tone of voice something about physically naive mathematicians.
  7. To equate two sides of an equation which are dimensionally inconsistent, with a suitable comment to the effect of, "Well, we are interested in the order of magnitude anyway".
  8. To the extensive use of "bastard notations" where conventional mathematics will not work.
  9. To invent fictitious forces to delude the general public.
  10. To justify shaky reasoning on the basis that it gives the right answer.
  11. To cleverly choose convenient initial conditions, using the principle of general triviality.
  12. To use plausible arguments in place of proofs, and thenceforth refer to these arguments as proofs.
  13. To take on faith any principle which seems right but cannot be proved.

The music genome project

Well here is something I discovered not a long time ago: the music genome project. Basically this is a streaming music "station" on the web where you input song and group you like and they make you listen to songs they think you will like based on the musical quality of the song you inputed. Their selection of song is rather limited (they don't know Symphony X for exemple and I couldn't find any classical artist.) but they still manage to show me a group or two that I had never hear of and that fit right into my taste of music.

So I'd advice you to check it out and see if it work for you, to correctly check it you have to perform a small internet trick but I will not give you more details then that.

[Silly post] Astronomy is for down to earth people

As the title say I will demonstrate that astronomy is for the down to earth people and not for people as most of you surely belive that have their head in the clouds. First do do astronomy you do not need to be tall enought to have your head in the cloud. In fact it would actually help if you did not as cloud hide stars. Beside to have your head even in low flying cloud you will have to be a few hundred feet tall, and biomecanics has shown that human like body cannot support their own weight at this size. So that at least prove then you do not need to have your head in the cloud to be an astronomer.

Now to prove the first part of this sentence: that astronomer need to be down to earth people. Astronomy means gazing at the stars to understand them. But to gaze at the stars the early astronomer had to incline their head backward which is as you can no doubt experience a very tiring position. Furthermore when you are in this position you cannot look around yourself and as you are standing you present a temping target for predator. To solve both these problem the early astronomer built in a defense meganism, instead of incling their head backward they would lay their body done on the groupe back first. No one does this provide a very good view of the stars it also reduce the standing presence to almost nil making you almost invisible to predators! But more important in this situation it puts you down to the ground... i.e down to earth!

HERE! I demonstrated with an irrefutable argument that astronomers where down to earth people.

King of the Hill

No this isn't a post about being king of any hill or anything of the kind. It's a post about the TV show King of the Hill or for those stuck in french country without access to english tv: "Henri pis sa gang". If you do not know this show it is basicly a show about the live of Henri Hill a texan (or in the quebec version a quebecer) of the typical stereotypical kinda: he loves the USA, drive a big car, find New Yorker stupid, has high moral, is religious and don't want to look bad for the neighbor. (In Quebec: replace reference to New York to Quebec and make him a subburband federalist). Now I either really like this show or hate it... Here is why: if it is a satir I love it, the second level irony in this show is amazing, the redneck guy being almost right even if the vice of modern society would have think otherwise if great. It is in a way a great critic of our society that Hill's vision of society and the more "accepted" vision exist side by side with little or no interaction and that in a way both think themself better. Now it does show that the redneck way seems to be the best but I think that might be an joke on the current stade of american society how it seems to want to go back to more down to earth value closer to the religious one preached by conservative christian

Now if it isn't ironic I hate it. For exactly the same reason, where it would be a great social critic if it was writen with the idea to provide entertainement it becomes a self-righteous pompous show about how their way of life is better then any other. And oh supreme crime (see irony at the Quebec society here) that the USA way of life is supremely good. I know it should stay the same but the reason for the show really would change my visioin of it.

Now I won't talk about the Quebec version, I'm sorry but I hate it when shows are Quebecquised (made to be set up in Quebec, with cultural reference replaced with BAD quebec one). In fact oh supreme irony again this is the kind of thing Quebec's artistic elite acuse the americain of doing to everything AND they say it is a despicable thing.... Am I the only one to find this ironic and silly?

Recycling vs pub!

Well I am a recycling kinda a guy, a trait I think I enherited from my ex. Doing recycling means every day/week sorting throught all sort of paper to see what can be recycled and what can't. Most of my paper recycling come in handy bag called Publisac, those of you not familar with the concept it is basicly pubs delivered in a bag to your door step. The first thing: here in Quebec the plastic bag those things come in is not in the home recycling list so you have to find by yourself a place where they take crapy plastic bag to recycle. Then I find that more and more ad are printed on glossed paper that ISN'T recyclable here... I find myself having to throw out more and more stuff because of this. It's almost as if pub people thought about a way of stoping people from throwing out their stuff in recycling without reading them. I hate that.

Oh well I guess that mean I'll be putting a no Publisac sing up soon and stop getting all the free pub I don't read anyway. That would solve the problem nicely except that I am pretty sure that the unclaimed Publicsac go into the dump directly instead of being recycled.

Materiaslism

Well today post will start with something strange.. materiaslism in RPG and computer MMPORPG. See I was thinking about something totally unlereated to that and I suddently realised (I often suddently realise things must mean my mind is operating on the Chaos Theory XP operating software) that all the fantasy RPG and computer RPG I play are basically bassed on the premisse that more wealth=more power/better individual. The chief offender of this is of course D&D where you need to "follow" a wealth/per character/level guideline if you want to continu using the published material without conversion. Now, this wouldn't be so bad if the power provided by wealth did not overshadow those provided by class level at highter level. In fact it is so prevelant that some DM report that characters would rather die than lose some of their most important stuff/magic weapon. In fact it is a lot easier to get back from the death then to repair/recover a destroyed item (or get back to your own sex if you get gender changed by something but that another weird thing). I'm normally an avid support of RPG has a way to teach values to kids but I find this particullar teaching disturbing, I know there are ways to easilly circonvent it but frankly many people want to play with the rules as writen...

Also that got me thinking about my own materialism, you see I'm a very materialisict guy, I love my stuff and I think that one of my goal is to be able to affort more stuff. Well I won't get stuff for stuff sake but I tend to like to have new toys as they say. For exemple I have two computers right now (well I needed a laptop!), I bought a relatively expensive digital camera for a trip even if one less expensive would have worked just fine. I'm apparantly the kind of guy that like quality and quantity of toys. I try to use all my toy so that they are at least worth the price I paid them but still I think I may be too prone to boy stuff. Oh well one more character flaw for me to work one, that what 2 billion?

I just had a thought perhaps this as something to do with my lack of girlfriend and my too tight criterium for a potential one. I like to have the best I can get in everything, so I probably apply the same reasoning to get the best girlfriend I could possibly get. that might explain it don't you think?

What is the title of this post anyway?

Well since I'm posting somethings again, got bored of not posting on my blog and I figured that my readers deserved a few posts. Beside as I said I was bored. I have a first problem I don't know if I should cut my hair or not, see I used to have something close to a buzz cut now it is long, in fact for the first time in my life I have hair that go lower then my eyes if I let it hang out. Some people (mostly those that knew me from a long time and where in the air cadets with me) thing I should cut it and that I look better with short hair, other, notablu my ex and my females coworkers seems to think longer hair suit me better. Since I don't really mind my hair, I kinda confused on what exactly look better. Personally I don't have any idea, long hair give me a style while short hair give me another. Both are very different so much that some people in my familly don't reconise me if I change my hair. I just realise that if any of you had a manly man image of me I just completly wrecked it with that hair talk.

On a completly unrelated topic I realise something strange about cashier at the super market they are either older then color TV while the rest are barely 20 years old if that. That really freaky, only young girl and senior seems to be working as cashier weird.

Well some of you might remember that I planed to participate in the National Novel writing month (also known as november) however my lazy somewhat busy mind forgot that it was to be and did not start the writing process yet because well I just remembered that I had to write AND saw it on an another blog. So my mind is really not in the novel writing frame set...

I'll see what I'll do, look up on this blog to see if I will do a novel or something in the near futur. Also piccolo I never called you fat. However I must say that this week-end you did it quite often...

Rememberance Day

Today is rememberance day, the day we remember our veteran, the people that fought in the battles of the past so that we did not to fight them ourself. Those that lived and died throught the horrors of war so that we did not have to. Those that rose to stand and fight for their country, freedom and belief, to protect the peace and to bring their children a brighter futur.

Remember them, honor them for thanks to them you enjoy the life you do. Remember those that fell for their sacrifice made your life safer. Remember those that fell and those that live for they are the heros of story.

And let us hope that we do not need to had another list of veteran in a new war, but if we ever do let us hope that we will rise in the shadow of the veterant of the past and perform for our children and our children's children this hard duty.

Oh irony...

Last post Piccollo posted the following comment:

For someone with nothing to say... First, you will not find a girl if you're staying in front of your computer playing games...

Second, you can find time to answer my e-mail that I sent you this morning???

So if I understand correctly: I've got to get off from the computer and THEN answer an e-mail I was sent... yes I think irony struck.

Ok, ok I admit it it not really irony since she specify that I have to stop playing games at my computer not just being on it... tho I wonder how she expect i'd find a girl staying in front of the computer answering HER married woman and mother of a little J e-mail... must be a weird woman mind thing that no guy can ever hope to understand.

Cause you know woman are crazy man are stupid but woman are crazy because man are stupid...

Well looks like I"m not posting again

Hi faithfull reader of which very few must remain in this world of the internet where lack of new contents for even a day can cost millions of readers (well ok I might not have millions of reader but that analogy stand!). Well there ain't really nothing new in my life and I don't have anything I fell like ranting about and instead of putting up endless mesage saying: well nothing really new, nothing really ranty so check back tomorrow message. I've decided not to post anything. There isn't anything really new or rantish right now but I wanted to post somekind of update.

First another reason for my lack of update is my World of Warcraft game, I'm playing relatively often and it is quite a good game at least up to now, I find that most of the time I get tired of a game after a month or two so we'll see. I'm playing a warlock and a Paladin on a server and a Druid on another, if it was not for the fact that all my friends have lvl 60 character while I'm not yet lvl 20 with any of my character I'm pretty sure it would be much more fun.

I don't have any real ranty stuff to tell, except for my still singleness and lack of prospect to stop this situation. I'm talking to a few girls but nothing really serious or even close to be maybe serious. A little depressing considering some of the comments I received from my ex and woman friends seems to point that I should find someone great... ;-p

Well good day I'll post something else sometimes else! have fun and Good luck to Little J for a quick recovery from surgery and to his parent that love him so very much. In fact I,m pretty sure that if love had a mass we would be in serious trouble as it might create a singulary that would tear appart the fabric of space time! Ok too geeky for an analogy but it's been a while you deserved a geeky part to that post.

Little J

those of you who also follows picollo's blog learned that Little J had his surgery yesterday. I did not want to post anything yesterday not to jinx his changes of getting into the operating room then. But now I want him and them to know that I thought about the little guy all day hoping everything would go well and that he would get into and out of the operating room well and that the surgery would be succesfull.

I also read about their 'adventure' with the social worker and am not impressed at his helpfullness... well I wish Little J and his parents luck on the recovery I'm pretty sure they'll be spending some time with the little guy in the coming days at the hospital. Remember stormcrow and piccolo we are thinking of you and little J.

Worrying, very worrying

While reading the news on CNN this morning I read this... I find it very worrying, very worrying indeed. While I nderstand the matter of national security (even for another nation) and how in a state of war it might be a good idea to keep somethings secrets I am completly against any secrets that involves prisoners of war (or simply prisoner taken in a war if they are not really taken as prisoner of war). Particullary if those secrets involve having those prisoners in another country. That smell too much like a license to bypass the laws. It also sound like the begining of a tyranical regime.. you know with prisons like this your political opponent could mysteriously be snatched by terrorist and since those camp are mostly with foreign intelligence officer the chance of a leak to your home country is theorically reduced...

Very scary, I did not think the world had fallen back to this.

After lucidity, solidarity and morbidity.

Well you remember the post I did not really comment on about the manifesto: For a clear eyed vision Quebec? if not you can find it here. Now there have been derision, support and discussion about this manifesto but no answer... well until now. I have been made aware from the SRC web site of two answer to the for a clear eyed vision of Quebec manifesto:

Manifesto For a morbid Quebec

and

Manifesto for an interdependant Quebec

I would recommand you read the three before reading further as I will makes some comments on them and I would not want to bias your ideas and opinions with mine. I will say that I have read the three carefull before making any comments and that I have tried to consider each views.

[line left blank to remind you to read the three]
[line left blank to remind you to read the three]
[line left blank to remind you to read the three]
[line left blank to remind you to read the three]
[line left blank to remind you to read the three]
[line left blank to remind you to read the three]
[line left blank to remind you to read the three]
[line left blank to remind you to read the three]
[line left blank to remind you to read the three]

Well enough stalling, first I must tell you that the For a morbid Quebec is supposed (according tot he SRC) to be a joke manifesto, a kind of Union response to the for a clear eyed vision of Quebec manifesto but intended as a joke. Now that it is out of the way my opinion this is after all what you came here to see right?

Now I have a bad feeling about the Manifesto for a interdependant Québec, why? because it is only availlable in french and while Quebec is mainly a french province we still count a significant number of english speaker publishing it only under one of the official language hint that they might have something to hide to me. Now that being said I have to say that both non joke manifesto forget the fact that they do not like, bend the fact that they want, disinform on the section they think help their position. While I tend to agree more with the clear-eyed manifesto I must say that the interdependant one makes some good points about how life in Quebec isn't so bad and that we should not throw our whole society plan out the window. The interdependant manifesto present things in a way I do not like, they attack the clear-eyed manifesto and use "scare" tactic like refering to this is what Bush do... and if even this "great evil" does thing like we want them to be done it must be the only way.

My main problem with the clear-eyed vision manifestio is the electricity increase proposition, first it would only mean Quebecer end up paying more for our electricity (our export is good but not yet to the level comparable with Alberta petrolium export) and will not increase the living standard of Quebec. I think that just about everything else they propose should be at least carefully considered and ways should be found to reconcile the economic imperative that will allow Quebec to prosper in the future with the social consideration that give us our hight standard of living.

Now for the joke one, well this joke manifesto scares me a little, first because it use a discrourse I have heard people use, second because some of it's opinion are as valid and as right as the ones presented in the two others. Why does the second part scares me? because people might endorse the rest of the manifesto as real or as a good idea because of that.

Finally here is my final though on this, do not support any of the manifesto, support ideas, learn and research on what you consider important and support those ideas. Do not blind yourself to the words of the opposition but consider them carefully they might be right. Quebec must change to face it's future, my opinion is that those change should take us away from our current socialist base model of society but I do not think we should stray too far from it. It as a good base we should only find way to make it viable on the long run and give it the possibility to follow living organism exemple and evolve with the times and changing condition in the world.

Halloween

Today it is halloween and as all halloween the astronomy group got togheter for it's costume lunch... and as always some people forgot to disguse themself. Of course not me I wore 3 disguise today... my scariest: me as a child psychologist, me as a witch and me as a fairie thing kinda... no pictures yet because well I didn't take picture of myself but I,ll probably post pictures of the other disguise tonight or tomorrow!

Have a nice halloween and remember juste because it's halloween doesn't mean the demon on the corner is some kid disguised.. particullary if it just ate a kid.

WoW

Well like millions of people before me I joined World of Warcraft, the time spend their can explain in par why I haven't been posting here that often. There where also the fact that I am working hard to produce a good looking scientific image (as opposed to a good looking image or a scientific image both of wich are much easier to obtain) for a astronomy calender and thinking about how I would dresse up for halloween...

right now I have two possibility for that something like a witch (yep that includes a dress... hmm seems that if I would do that I'd be cross-dressing... could my manly pride take this... yeah why not ;-)) or a australian road sign saying: Kangoorou crossing.. easier on the manly pride but not really funny or halloweeny. Tomorrow maybe pictures!... which ever I choose!

Homogenising population...

I've noticed something I find disturbing but that I can't really find bad.. well I'm not sure how I can find it as in a way i can see how it is good but I can also see how is bad. You see I've begun to wonder about the way we try to be fair to everyone. If we noticed we try to be fair to everyone by providing exactly the same thing to everyone. Being fair to everyone is an important thing for a society to be equitable and well fair but... I fear that this providing exactly the same thing to everyone undermine one basic thing about our society we are not exactly the same person so we do not need exactly the same services. Now it is fair but it is not what we need and it as a at least in my mind frightening corollary, it tries to force people to be exactly the same to homogenise population and how they thing to remove things that are different opinion that are different. By forcing everyone to conform to the same services we are in a way using the database to try and update reality.

Sure once again I complain without a solution and I'm very aware that until I (or someone smarter (or not) then I am) find a better solution it is better then unfair services to everyone. Still I belive that we need to strive for a greater personalisation of the world while retaining the idea that everyone is also responsable for their place in society. In a way a kind of symbose-like society, it provides the individual for services the individual needs and cannot provides for itself while the individual tries his best to be a part of the society and improve his lots and the lots of other and the society throught his action.

I have a very hard time putting this into words as I am not quite sure what I think would be best and how it can be explained. Or exemple of the problem... or even the source of this reasoning... it's annoying.

I need to get out and have some fun!

I'm getting depress right now, I know why. It's quite simple, I've not being out of my appartement (much less out on a date) in like forever.. well not forever just since I got my damn freaking sinus infection. Well it seems to be getting better so I'll get some out time get a beer with friends, flirt with pretty young woman (if I can find the courage to do that :-)) and generally enjoy myself out of my place... just to well you know put my mind into another track or somesuch.

Keyboard problems thank god!

My other computer (yeah you know I'm a bi computer kinda guy I have a MAC and a PC) caused me quite a scare... it wouldn't boot and showed sign of either a mainboard failure or a keyboard problem. So after a few check I couldn't find anything wrong with my keyboard. I started to be quite scared as I cannot affort a new motherboard (wich would implies a new CPU, new memory, new video card, new sound cart and probably new hard drive..., a few hundred dollards that I do not really have rightg now). So I tried a last desperate check of my keyboard I used my old computer (now my sister's computer) to try to boot with my keyboard... and it failled!!!! so that means my keyboard is posted! thank god (well my motherboard still my be busted by the chance of that are now much lower.) so tomorrow I'll go and get a new keyboard (as even if my motherboard is busted I still need one) and hope for the best I don't know what kind of keyboard I'll buy but I'm sure I'll find something.

For a clear-eyed vision of Quebec

For those of you not living in Quebec, a few days ago a group of well known people in Quebec publied a manifesto. This manifesto's goal is to wake up people and sensibilise them to the futur problem Quebec will face and to propose solutions to those. I invide you to go and read it and make you're own opinion about it. I won't tell you what I think about it but if you read it you'll probably be able to figure it out.

Stupid age verification

You might have seen this over the internet since like forever there are stupid age verification procedure to register to the most banal things (like forum, newsletter and playing games). Those age verification all work relatively with the same principe: they ask you to provide your birth date so that they can verify that you are indeed above the age they require to give you their services. I don't know about you but I have known since I was like 6 how to perform the basic arithmetic needed to figure age x - minus current year = year I should put there to get access.

I bet that most children these can also do these math and that most people with basic reasoning skill can realise that so why oh why are we still using this pathetic age verification methode? It's not like it work. Well ok I can see that it would allow compagnie X to say if there is a breach of contract or something: well the person lied and as such we are not liable... but I find this a little stupid.

Oh well that just me you know.

Interesting things

Last night while reading a good book (well not really a good book more like a rule book for D&D but my geekiness is already high enough) I was watching a documentary on the raise of Fascism in britain between the two world war. Since I am not very informed on the history of europe in the last century I did not realise how big a movement fascism as been. Oh I knew that every where in the world people talked about it and even that some political parties existed but not the extend of which this mouvement went. The documentary also went over some of the factor that promoted the raise of fascism and some of the scariest thing is that many of those factors are begining to come back in our lives. All that would be needed for fascism rebirth (in my opinion) is the raise of a charismatic leader.

But then again most political mouvement needs a charismatic leader or figure head at the moment. Still I belive we should be worried that the factors are once again begining to arise that could lead to the raise of fascism or things of that nature.

Retirement home

Well today I'm getting older again, 28 years old, almost time for my retirement party you know so I'm looking into retirement home. I want something with sexy young nurse, every commodity a old man like me needs (internet, sport places, parachutism class, organised traval around the world, beer, wine and of course satellite TV). If you know any that isn't too expensive please tell me so that I can get into it. LOL well I'm talking it well as you can see.

Enough with the geek post! [well once more]

well as I told you tuesday I'm going to be DMing a D20 modern game about magic coming back to the world in a blast. Well what you do not know (well if you do know tell me how and we might be able to cash the 1M$ price for proof of psychic powers!) is that I do not know the system and how it works (see me post on the reality in RPG guy for why this is important). Now I just learned the system, well what can I say I read fast, and there is a part that I do not like the magic system. D20 modern use a simillar magic system then D&D which even if it's not a bad system it surely will not transmit de feel I want for my game (I want it to be high discovery, high magic, dynamic ever changing magic in short I want a Mage the Awakening like magic system).

So tonight I've decided that I would great a feat/skill based magic system for the D20 modern game I'll play. It will involve the spellcraft skill and you will combine different powers (like energy, influence, defense or stuff like that it is still kinda nebulous) to get a difficulty for your effect if you can manage a spellcraft roll againts that DC you cast the spell if not well it doesn't work. I'm thinking of putting an Hit point cost as a balancing factor or something of the kind. I hope my player will like it.

On a not related note congradulation Anyflower on your new appartement!

Knife of Dreams finished

I just finished knife of dream. Frankly I'm a little at lost on commenting about this book. It is a good book but something feel rushed. A lot of things happen in the book (things I will not talk about in case someone amongts you decide to read that serie). I still think that Robert Jordan cannot finish the serie in one more book (rumors say he doesn't want to finish at volume 13... superstition or another thing).

The end of the world is supposed to be coming and things are falling appart but not enought for me to belive that the end of the world is there. In fact quite the opposite things seem to be going the hero's way like never before well almost never before. Oh well I'll be waiting for the 12th one or for Feast of Crowd in the Song of Ice and Fire serie (another really great fantasy serie)

My next roleplay game!

Well I don't feel like working at the moment so to have a proscratinating excuse let me write about the game I will be DMing in a few weeks/months with my Quebec gaming group. To increase the amongt of time I am in the not working section of the univers first let me tell you of the games I will not be DMing by way of not having being choosen by the group. So here it goes I give you the top 4 games (the 1st one being of course the game my group chose)

4th, Star Wars: Dawn of the Republic

10 000 years before the battle of Yavin the republic was just being born, formed of a few tens of species and backed by the newly born jedi order it was to herald an eternity of peace and prosperity to the galaxy. As if the Force was behind the republic every day brought new species willing to join the galactic Senate and lend their spirit, strenght and diversity to the republic promoting harmony and peace all around the galaxy. The Jedi order, faithfull gardiant of peace and life traveled around those world already member of the republic protecting the innocent, righting wrongs and generally insuring that peace and justice prevailled everywhere. the Jedi order also traveled beyond the border of the republic encouraging by exemple people to join this one galaxy gouvernement, convincing them of the benifits of peace and the value of the jedi as neutral arbiter and defenser of life. It was to be the dawn of the greatest civilisation in the history of the galaxy, it was to be peace and justice for all, but no utopia is even acheived without pain or easilly. Dark cloud obscured the futur of the Republic into the force, the strongest of the jedi master felt a shadow approching a shadow the like of which the Jedi Order had never dreamed of.

3rd, Scarred Land: Darakeene

The Divine war has spared the militaristic land of Darakeene, no armies of titanspawn had burned it's town or poisonned it field. It as stood firmly behind the gods sending it's war college trained soldier into every battle, insuring victory when defeat should have been the outcome. Now, 150 years after the end of the Darakeene is a nation in turmoil. It's aging king has no heir, rebellion is brewing in most of it's province, a new god: That which Abide is gathering worshiper. Treats from beyond the border are raising, titanspawns long hidden in the inhospitable land beyond Darakeene's border are stiring and thristing for revange again the untainted land. It's one proud navy having deserted to built a new country Darakeene is on the verge of collaspe, on the verge of civil war on the verge of dying... Darakeene needs heros.

2nd, The Ironkingdoms: Full Metal Fantasy

Welcome to the mechanika revolution, when arcana and machina are combined to improve the life of all that live on the land. Steam and mecamagical power bring advanced in science and magic never thought possible by our ancestors. Railroads and steam mills provides communication and work for hundreds. But steam and mecamagical power also bring wars, titans of steel, magic and steam walk the battle field, the warjacks, new gods raise to herald the coming of new powers. Old god stirs not willing to simply lie down and die, the Iosian recluse and secretive seems to be preparing for wars. The necromantic construction of the dreaded dragon god raids with ever increasing number the coast of the Ironkingdoms. Truely we live in an interesting time.

1st, Reality Disfunction

2005 announced itself to be just another year. Science was progressing steadily, the internet was becoming ever more present in the life of humans, nothing that couldn't have been predicted by observation. Nothing until june 7th, every television screen, every radio, every computer broadcasted a single message: "People of Earth, for millemium the Illuminati as keept your birthright from you. In the old day, the stole Earth's magic, stole the power that should be yours and sealed it away in the jewels of Zarkenjisk. Today, friends and fellow human I give you back what his yours!" From the middle of the atlantic a energy waves burst and circled the earth changing everything. People found themself transforming, becoming elfs, dwarf, minotaures, orcs and other mythical creature, city suddently found their underground spreading, widening becoming ever more complex and plunging deeper into the Earth. Creature appeared, creature thought legendary or impossible, Manticores, unicorns, bassilisk, even Dragons burst forth into the land. Lastly even more catastrophic and life changing... magic returned to the world.

I must say I am very enthousiat about that last game I'm pretty sure I can make it a great game I just need to find a story to tell ;-)

Knife of Dreams

Well my social life just left the building, I got the new Wheel of Time book by Robert Jordan Knife of dreams. If you do not know the serie it is very a currently 11 book long fantasy serie. It's a really great serie and as the advantage of being very catching you start reading one of those book you can't stop until the book is done and then you need the rest of the serie! kinda annoying but still fun I love book sof that kind gives me something to read and immerce myself in when I fell like escaping.

On another note I just spend the whole day with Hubert Reeve the astrophysicist. He was a Ulaval for two conferences today and as an astronomie student I was part of a diner with him after his first talk. Both where quite interesting and even if I see the man every year I am always impressed with his skill at communication and making science interesting and simple for everyone. His first talk was a general public talk, the room seats 400 and there was about 100 peoples standing, quite a feat and impressive for a physic talk.

Final Fantasy: Advent Children

Well it seems it is a great week for me and movies. I have watched Final Fantasy: Advent children and it is a great really great movie. Well probably if you haven't played the game Final Fantasy VII you won't find it as interesting but since I really loved that game (one of my favorite Final Fantasy game... yeah there are enought of those game that you can really get a favorite!). they every characters (including Cath!!!) and the battle scene are Final Fantasy amazing (yeah, that between Star Wars Amazing and oh my god this is the end of the univers Amazing, the only thing above those thing is the Asaathi Speachless amazing which actually never occurred in then history of the universe.. well it happened once but just at the moment of the big bang so it was before the history of the universe)...

In short I loved the movie... and I am kinda jalous of anyflower, she apparently found a great guy just a few months after her divorse and I can't seem to meet anyone so here I'm jalous of her! ;-) Well no not really I'm very happy for her but I'd like to have the same chance.

Reality of the Rule [RPG geek alert!]

Now for a post that only about 1 reader I know about might find intersting. A post about something that I have been pondering for quite a while. How the rules in an RPG influence that game being played. I mean most people wouldn't use the White Wolf 10-sider system to potrait a realistic war simulation, nor would they use the ultra realisitic Rolemaster system for a cinematic Hong Kong Kung fu movie game. Those are extreme case but I have come to belive that the influence of the rules system on the game is much more profound.

Take for exemple D20 (the dungeon and Dragon system) and the Star Wars D20 system (both are basically the same system at one big execption how they handle character vitalllity i.e how hard they are to kill), In the usual D20 system it is very hard to kill an high level character, they almost always have 100 of hit points, saves that allows them to survive the average and not so average vilain killer attack and an armor class the rivalise armored battleship of modern time. On the other hand the Star Wars D20 system makes high level character very easy to kill, at most they can take one or two blaster hits and go down (a character can only survive damage up to his constitution) and while their save can allow them to dodge a nuclear explosion at close range the half damage rules means they still die.

What does that means when play times comes, well the action will be very different, in standard D20 you will see people basicly standing in front of each other and hiting each other with kitchen ustensil until one or the other run outs of hit points. While in the Star Wars game people (even jedi to a lesser extend) will dodge and run for cover trying for lucky shot, incredible movies like move and generally tries to be more negotiating.

I often hear DM that the system in which they play the game is not important and I always wondering how this can be true, so much rest on the system even if the DM is fudging for the players it remains that the system are like the laws of physics and they kinda define how your character will be influence and should react to event around him. The D20 hit points system for example makes it easy for people to fight long battle where a minutes advantages in one round will not matter much as it will have a very small impact on survivability. Other system like Alternity and White Wolf with characters that can take very few hits bring for short intense combat where a small temporary advantages can shift the course of the battle. That probably means in short that you should always consider the system your going to use with your game.

hmm internet trasmiting a virus?

Those of you also reading anyflower's blog have come across this post yesterday, this post which seem to implies that I somehow magically gave anyflower a cold from all the way across the internet throught sillicon chips and optical fiber. Not to mention all the other router old copper wire and security measure to stop such biologicial virus from passing. Of couse being intelligent logical being you do not belive for a second that this could be possible, you search for the truth which probably is that she spend a little too much time sailling and not sleeping and as such her immune system is weakened allowing any small virus hiding in her roommate aseptic appartement to latch on to her as a last refuge.

You of course would be wrong, my super cold virus that can be targeted and transmited throught the internet is now working soon I will dominate the world!!!!!!MWUAHAHAHAHA but don't worry I'm a kind dictator, I will only kill people on the first day of the month and I offer free health care to anyone that can survive a week in Quebec hospital without catching some weird jungle disease. And beside thanks to my blognotisation techniques you will all be under my powers... which reminds me: You are in my power you did not read me admiting that I transmited a super cold virus, it is just the local answer of anyflower under dirty appartement that caused her cold. you will not remember being blognotised.

Gas prices

Once again I witness the strange dance of gas prices here in Quebec city. Just before the week end gas prices climbed up by 15 cents and now that the week ends over the gas price fell down 5 cents for a net increase of 10 cents. Why did the gas increase in the first place? I like most people have no idea, however they cannot claim lowered supplies nothing happened in the worlds thursday to limit the amoungt of fuel we had availlable (what you say the huricains around the coast of the Mexican gulf? sorry but prices already increased to reflect the lowering of supplies caused by thoses huricain. A increase in prices that happened before we knew the full extant of the damage I might add). They cannot claim an increased demande in Quebec city, this was a perfectly normal week-end, no holyday, no start of school no nothing. If nothing changed, no reducing of supplies no increase of demande, no change in any factor that would logically increase the prices of something why does the prices continu to increase?

Well after looking at the Regie of Energy web site I found some answer... First here in quebec the price of gas is regulated by this organism that set up the minimum price a liter of gas can be sold (at the moment it is something around 55 cents before transport and taxes), then there is taxes of fuel, taxes that are weirdly distributed (according to the data I found, for quebec city there is 25 cents of taxes on every litter of gas... 25 cents that about 1/4 of the prices), then you have to transport the gas... through truck that need gas so every increase in gas price increase the amougt you pay for transport which increase gas price (vicious cycle ain't it?) and finally you get the sales taxes, because of course gas is taxed TWICE!, 7% for the federal gov and 7,5% for the provincial gov. Add to that the profits by the detaillant and you get gas price in the 1.19$ range for today.

Now I understand how the gas can cost that much, there are two factors I found annoying, the minimal price and the 25 cent fuel taxes. We have a sell taxe that applies on gas and the minimum price isn't really helping anyone since I see more and more gas station closing (the mimimum price was supposed to protect small vendor by preventing price wars). And the governement keep saying that the increase in gas price is costing him incredible amougts of money so obviously the 25 cents taxe isn't helping and the sales taxes are adding oil to the fire so to speak.

I belive it is time to cuts taxes on gas and to remove the minimum price artificial limit, the price of gas influence all aspect of our lifes directly or indirectly. When gas price increase we end up paying more for gas but also for food, bus fares, cd, and just about every other goods as our society is complety dependant on gas. We know that until an alternative is found gas consomption will remain about the same (a study in the US has found that people would not change their habits as long as gas price did not reach AND stay at 4$ a gallon), so I think it is time to cut the people some slack and encourage with all our resources new fuel sources research... Research that would include environmental impact before we set it loose this time, hopefully that would give us the chance to escape the green house disaster that are billions of cars.

Well I did not know what to post about until I saw that this was to be my 225th post! wow what a great number. Well aside from this completly irrelevant fact here is what happening on my front. The cold seems to be in fact a clue, I suffered from fevers today but it seem to be getting better as the day move forward. Luckily. At least I don't cough every two seconds.. no now I have a runny nose that force my to blow my nose every five minutes (yes I know too much details for you but hey it's my blog I can write just about whatever I want). I also slept most of the day yesterday and today, really hmm boring days you can imagine but hey I hope I'll get better thanks to those sacrifices.

Serenity and the Notebook

Well here come two movies review. First one things: if you have not seen Serenity yet (it's been out for a big 24 hours what are you waiting for) stop reading right now yes right now and go see it. Yes it is that good, even better if you want my opinion. If you are still reading (which of course you are since you never listen to me) and do you want to see Serenity well you have been warned I could tell spoilers.

Serenity review:

It was a great movie, a really great movie, an Episode IV of Star Wars good movie. Like the firefly series on which the movie is based it is set in an other solar system where a recent war between the central industrialised planed and the outer frontiere like planet. We follow the adventure of the Serenity's crew a firefly class transport that are doing semi legitimate jobs like stealing from a train and simple delivery job. They recently toook on bord a doctor and his sister with a mysterious past. The special effect are great and the story even better, even if we find ourself in a strange futur with a Far West ambiance. Their is also lots of humors in the movie and a great vilain. In short out of 10 I would give it an 10.5.

The Notebook

This is a very romantic movie, kinda sad but excellent. It actually made me cry, the ending is so sweet and sad that I couldn't help it. The story is simple, a man is reading a journal to a woman that has alzeimer disease. The story he reads is very romantic, it is the story of the love between a rich girl and a poor guy. anyway since I don,t want to spoil to movie for anyone that might want to see it I won't tell anything more except that it is a really romantic movie, really sweet and an a great tale of love. I also give it a 10.5 out of 10.

on completly unrelated news: damn cold leave me alone!

Tomorrow's holiday

In my universe tomorrow will be do not wear a purple hat with pink flower and brown bear hand drawn on the back day. So I encourage you all to follow this culturaly significant day and not wear a purple hat with pink flower and brown bear hand drawn on the back. It is very important to my univers survival and cultural distinction, you see this holiday was invented 200000 picosecond ago when a demon wearing a purple hat with pink flower and brown bear hand drawn on the back appeared and started to remove the law of my universe by saying things like deadline and you have to hurry while increasing the work load the unverse had to perform in order to stay incoherent. The demon was eventually defeated on the day of tomorrow by having it drink a very hard mixture of paint, labatt 50, light beer and water while making him think it was the most weird of drink: green milk (which his way weirder then blue milk! blue milk was used in a galaxy far far away a long time ago, while green milk will only be used in the futur in a galaxy that doesn't exist anymore!).

So in short, PLEASE! PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF PI don't wear a purple hat with pink flower and brown bear hand drawn on the back tomorrow.

Thank you, that was a public announcement of the asaathi workload is making him loose coherence and rational thoughts. We now return you to your completly non-random and non-logical reality. Have a nice day.

Not feeling so well..

I've been feeling sicky those past few day (about a week in truth) you know coughting, mild congestion a mild case of the cold... or so I thought. In last 24 fours hours that mild case of cold as gotten much less mild, with heavy coughting, probably some fever (nothing dramatic but enough to feel hot or cold at weird moment), headaches and generaly not feeling well. To add to my not feeling well, I get random down in my motivation. I work for a few hours and then get kinda depressed and can't work for an hour or two. That not too bad but with the feeling physically sick this is really annoying. I'll get over it surely when I'm done with my urgent work for friday, I hope.

Classical.

I've been in the mood to listen to classical music, not just any classical music but grandios epic kind of classical music (kinda like Ride of the Valkiries or things like that) but sadly I suffer from a lack of that kind of classical music. So you, (yofed, picollo and even you anyflower!) my music knowing friends have to suggest some that I could listen to. The best suggestion will get a personalised post on my blog, yes, the suggestion I like the most will have it's very own entry in the magnificient words of my blog! Ain't that a great price? well probably not but hey it's just about all I have to offer ;-)

Feeling silly but no inspiration

That annoying I want to post something really silly because I find myself feeling that I want to be silly in a weird sort of way, but for some reason I don't have any inspiration to post anything sorry. The Weird side of the force has left me.. that must be because I don't have a master, an apprentice and a foo because you know always pi they are a master, an apprentice and a foo. The foo is always the most powerfull of the three in the weird side of the force.

On a completly unrelated topic I just heard something strange on a podcast (the infidel guy) I listen too, first that woman orgasm help woman keep a flat stomac. Apparently unsexually satisfy woman uterus expend and having orgasm force it to contract back. Also, apparently shallowing after a fellatio is good for depression and fertility for woman. Good news for guy but I think woman might argue about that.

unimportant annoncement

Well I am officially out of my last appartement, today I put primer on the walls and cleaned my last appartement. Well I had a lot of help from my parents (thank god for parents willing to help their children move and paint), who luckily did a lot of the work. But now I felt like I really moved out of that place and into my new appartement. That kinda like feel like a new begining in a way, a new step in my life for some strange reason. Well not really strange reason I guess the reason is pretty straight forward, my last place was a place I shared with V and kinda like built, painted, decorated by us for us (well mostly V, nah not really). So it wasn't a me kinda place and now my place will be an Assathi like place.

Well maybe a Asaathi and futur roommate place but for now it's a me place.

Sister Britney [silly post finally!]

I was talking with Yofed and she told me that she dreamed of being either a nun or a sucessfull signer. So that got my mind thinking... what would a sucessfull nun signer looks like, yofed tried to break my fun by telling me of a signing nun that sign orthodox hyms but that did not work so here is what I thought about:

Version 1: We have a pop signing that is a nun... a sort of 18-20 girl that choose religion, became a nun and to repopularise the catholic (or another church with nuns) decide to spread her message throught pop song... We would have that pretty 18-20 girl (think of a Britney Spear kinda girl) signing something like :"Bless me baby one more time!" or "I'm a slave for God" or "From the bottom of my god loving hearth" in her nun outfit while scandly (by scandly I mean that you can see a few millimiters of skin) glad man and woman danced suggestively behind her (by suggestively I mean in a catholic faith like maner, you know praying, walking down the aisle and after a mock wedding sharing their first missionary style night of happiness...). I can see the cover of her album showing her diffamously showing her ankle under her skirt and moving more daring from her with the last one showing a shoulder! We could have special show where priest and other nuns pass the communion around the cheering crowd, reading of the good book in the middle of the show.

Version 2: We have a pop signing that is a nun... a sort of 18-20 girl that choose religion, became a nun and to repopularise the catholic (or another church with nuns) decide to spread her message throught pop song...We would have that pretty 18-20 girl (think of a Britney Spear kinda girl) signing something like :"Bless me baby one more time!" or "I'm a slave for God" or "From the bottom of my god loving hearth" in her modified nun outfit, it is a clingly skintight almost transulsit black fabric. In fact in some light some of her fan swear they saw some skin. On each side of her dancer dress as nuns and priest in the same skin tight things except instead of they are real young priest and nun that for some reason know how to dance and want to give a younger face to the catholic church. She would hint at sexuality while not giving any and making sure the message of god goes throught with mariage and the 10 commandement.

Now, wouldn't that be a funny fresh idea? Well maybe it isn't a good idea but it would be a fresh idea no? at least it's silly?

No witty title

I couldn't think of a title so you get the no witty title one. Don't want to? well propose a good title for this post and well that pretty much it. Yesterday was my grand-mother funerail, a formal affair where I realised that this side of my familly was way bigger then the other. There must have been over an 100 people there. What really struck me was the number of very young children, one of my cousin as 2 (one around a year old) and is pregnant with another (all boys from what I know.. poor little her), the wife of another cousin just had a daughter (4 months old at the moment) and another one of my cousin is preggant with a daughter. I think this is fantastic, more and more young children! Those are fun ;-)

Some news from me since I've been silent

Well I haven't posted for a week so I think it is time for me to post something. First, I moved out to my new appartement. I will post the picture in a few days when I have finished placing my stuff in, it looks quite good but with box everywhere you probably won't get the correct idea. So that is the first thing that happened saturday. The second thing is sader, my grand-mother died. She was very old, and for the last few years her health and her faculities have steadilly declined, saturday her condition worsen dramatically. We learned she had fallen ill at around 14h and 3 hours latters she died. In a way I think it was a relief for her she had been in constant pain for the last year and the last few days where particullary bad. I will miss her presence even if I was never really close to her.

On alternativy energy sources

I've being thinking lately about all the aternative to fossil fuel. You know really thinking and frankly I find that the answers are kinda depressing. First, aside from the fact that the alternative fuel will cut/remove our dependance on fossil fuel there is not really any advantages to most alternative fuel. Everything that implies burning carbon based compound (such as oil, bio-dieseel, methanol and everything organic basicly) end up producing CO2 and H2O, two very efficient green house gaz. (I think in fact that water vapor is a more dangerous green house gaz than CO2). That means that if for exemple every vehicule used methanol, we would still produce dangerously high level of green house gaz.

Another alternative would be hydrogene as a fuel, well the combustion of hydrogene produce water vapor, which as I said before is another green house gaz. Finally there is electric car, well then we have to produce the electricity and that as most/all energy production methods produce polluction in one way or another.

The point of this post is not to say that the current green house/pollution crisist in unsolvable but to get people to think a little more long term about the effect of the new fuel source. Our main problem is not really the one car or one fuel source, it is the fact that there are over 6 billions of us using a fuel source that produce pollution. I wonder if it is possible to keep our technology and standard of living with that many people on the planet, in fact I wonder if any standart of human living can be maintained on the planet with the number of human there are now. Remember also that the number of human is constantly increasing...

A week end!

I just spent the last week end trying to follow Chibichtullu suggestion for the paint job at my new appartement... unfortunatly it didn't work, it turned out looking quite well in fact. Too bad I'm not done yet.. I planed to move in next week end, well I'll just have to paint some more during the week..

Once it is done I will post before/after pictures (unfortunatly the before picture where taken after the cleaning was done and cannot show the "horror" of the color) it should be before saturday or sunday.

Dilema, dilema

Well now I have a problem... a simple enough problem I would say but still a problem I don't know what color to paint my new appartement.. and I want to paint it this week-end (so if you are in the Quebec area and know me and want to help give me a call... please, pretty please!). Since I am a lazy person and I don't want to paint the appartement every year I have to get colors I will like and be able to live with for a least a few years. Right now my biggesst problems are over the master bedroom and the living room (the rest I can handle with boring old neutral colors), I don't want them in neutral color but I can really figure an arragment of colors that would fits.

My current idea is to go with a cocooning set-up using earth tone for the living room and warm-romantic/calm tone for the masterbedroom. But it isn't working really well for the moment... particullarily for the bedroom, right my best idea (best does not in any denote good) is something like orange-red wall, gray-beige doors and blue ceiling. The living room (and kitchen for that matter) is pretty much set to be a dark earth tone on the bottom of the wall, lighter earth tone and between the two a red seperation. Should look great but I'm not yet sure what, earth tone exactly I want...

Well if you have any ideas I'll listen to them. and in the end probably end up with a psychadelic looking appartement. would be fun no?

Batman Begins... IMAX style!

Well last night in a spurr of the moment thing I went with a friend to see Batman begins in IMAX. It was the first time I saw the movie and I must say I was pleasantly surprised, it is a great batman movie. In fact it is the best batman movie I have seen. Well that not saying a lot since the other recent batman movie where really bad but hey that still something.

On another note, I think my criterium for woman beauty have been lowered... or maybe there is a whole lot of really gorgeous woman at the university these days. Just thought I would share this with you.

Anoter year, another crop of students

Well another school year start and a new bunch of futur physisict enter the wall of our not so venerable university. With this new year we also have a millenia old tradiation: the initiation. This year the aspiring physict student are dressed as chicken.... yep no idea what is the link between physics and chicken but they do look quite funny. They have a big yellow beak, some feather (actually a number of feather that is the result of an integral.... ) padded butt, yellow shows, tight to give them chicken legs and a punger as a tail.

No, I don't have picture I really should have brought my camera but you know how I am forgetfull and all. ;-)

On another note, I had quite a good game last night... ok I was only usefull as a taxi and diplomate but still it was fun. Oh and Nagashinou is back with his croonie Ernique... if that means anything to you.

Lets start the moving process!

Well, I did not think it would happen this year but as you know I'll be moving in a few weeks... that means I have to start the moving process well like today... lets use that long week end to do something productive. So from today foward I'll be in the process of packing things up so that I can move hopefull around the 15th of september. Everyone that wants to help are welcome to come but you have to know that most of my stuff is books.. so expect lots and lots of heavy box filled with way too many books.

Yep I'm a bookworm... I love reading books and I love owning book I don't know why but I find it more satisfying to read MY book then to read a library book... must be my weird materialistic self asserting itself. DOWN MATERIALIST SELF DOWN! ;-) Good day.

Dream fracking theater!

As anyflower knows last night I went to see the Gigatour at the Bell center in Montreal featuring DREAM THEATER! The shows started at 16h30 with at first two groups I don't remember the name of.. the first one was bad musically but good for a show, lots of energy even if they seemed unable to do something other then fuck... the other group well... not as good. Then came the first groups I really wanted to see: Symphony X, great performance but the crowd got a little too much in the show so the sound was crappy. but still GREAT show. After that we had Nevermore... not bad but not impressive... then we had Life of Agonie, who's music an presence on stage can be describe by their name, I am trying to represse that memory you know...

Afterward the bigs name started coming.. first Fear Factory, I didn't know them all that well before the show but they were good..... and a great introduction for Dream Theater! We where supposed to have a little 90 minutes alone with them... we ended up with close to 2 hours with amazing performances... It was a really great show and dreams really know how to work the crowd. They played from quite a few of their album, mainly the last two but we had a few performance form Scence from a Memory and Metropolis. So in short IT WAS AMAZING!

oh and afterward Megadeth played... but I was on a too big Dream Theater buzz to realise it.... yes, dream is that good.. Dream is DREAM!

So well that the reason there was no poste yesterday... too much fun listening to dream.. now I have a rage of listening to Scene from a memory in loop.

Opinions are bad. [longuish]

Well, you might all know that I am a supporter of freedom of speach. You might also know that I supported the french station CHOI from Quebec. Today, the federal court of canada ruled that the CRTC decision was correct, that the opinion of one man (who is no longer on the air or employed by the station) that resulted in 92 complains (over 2 years) were justification enough to close the station. 92 complains, most of which anonimous or from competing stations when the CRTC received over 4000 letters of support from the publics. Letters of support that where signed and came from people who identified themself and gave contact information. 92 complains which his according to one Toronto's radio jock (who's name escape me at the moment but he did an interview with Jeff Fillion at the begining of this crisis) far less then what the average Toronto station received in a year.

Countless thing that I personnaly consider a violation of due process in an earing to close the station. From one of the official SLEEPING during supporter presentation, to removing the right to built a defense to the station owner. They even IN THEIR JUGEMENT (french version, change FRN to ENG to get the english version) where according the CRTC document they have to consider all information in their entierty and context they use the following: ... at the begining and end of a part of text. How can they claim that it is complet when they are cutting part of it?

Sure, some people do not agree thinking that the words said on CHOI more then justify the treatement, some of those people might even have the right to say this as they have listened to the station and heard for themself. We are supposed to be a tolerant country, acception of all views and all people of earth... yet it feels like this tolerance only extant to those it is fashionable to be tolerant about. A classical case of open minded meaning: who has the same opinion as I do.

There is something I wonder tho, the people that wants to close CHOI because it "was" promoting hate, diffaming people on the air and being misogynic they can understand that the comment where that way, why do they think the rest of the population could not do the same? What is in this man opinion that they fear most people would misunderstand as fact and form mobs to kill/hurt other people? Why do they think those listening to CHOI are stupids moron incapable of discerning right and wrong or opinion from fact? Why are the listener classed as (by Radio-Canada) "uneducated, young 20 something angry white man"? And if they are, how is that a crime, or a justification to say that they are less then? less then who actually educated, 6o something happy black woman?

CHOI will appeal before the suppreme court of Canada, but considering the political climate, the hate I see, hear and read in the news again CHOI, I belive that the struggle is in vain. The suppreme court will either refuse the appeal or upheld the CRTC censorship and my favorite radio station will die. It will die because opinion that where not liked where heard on the air, it will die because it did not have friend in the governement, and it will die because someone got scared it could get 50 000 peoples in the street in support.

So, this is a sad day for freedom of speechs, the first radio station closed because of opinions in an industrialised, democratic country. If we later become a dictatorship or some other non democratic form of governement, maybe this will be seen as the first step. I may be exagerating but then again I might not be...

Rainning

Well as you can guess it is now rainning over quebec city. It as been for the past few hours and it probably going to be for the next day or so... It's not the bad kind of rain but I would feel better with sun and soft wind. Oh well that kinda like saying I don't have anything to talk about today so I'm talking about the weather.

Have fun.

Finally finished!

Hi there guys, I finally got my oral presentation done and my predoc is completed. It went pretty well, one of my examinator had interesting questions and comments about my projet. He claims it might be too ambitious but well I'll try anyway. It'll be fun to try and also it will be fun to finally be free of the stress from this things.

Speaking of the stress of this thing, something bad happened because of it. this morning I was praticing my presentation and trying to zone out the rest of the world when one of my friend sneaked up to me to say: "Hi". she was really close to my ears and since I was zoned out I didn't really hear her out, I thought it was a fly, so I did the little move away fly hand movement... slapping her right in the face. I should have appologiesed right away but since I didn't even have time to turn my head before she slapped me my appology died in indignation of being interrupted, slapped and breaking my train of though. After calming down a bit I try to appologies but she is now pissed and won't talk to me... I hate that kind of situation but I can't really help it so I'll just have to wait and see if the 5 appologies I told her will be enough of if I lost a friend because of this. I hope not, she might not be my best friend but still I value her friendship and her insights.

Parent need to let there children go

This is what I am refeering too. Parent event if they love their children got to know that children should be allowed to make mistake on their on and also to pay for their mistake on their own. Sure, parent wants what best for their kid but with today's short term vision they most often forget that the best in the short term will make them unable to be independant and wholesome later in life.

It all bogs down to learning responsability you know, if someone else always solve your problem for you when will you be able to solve them yourself? you will always end up blaming someone else for your mistake and expecting someone to pay for them...

So please parent when your kids get to college let go, advice them but do not control their life or try to solve all little problem for them. They'll manage and will be better person for it.

The simple pleasures.

Today I got to indulge in one of my greatest pleasure: reading a good book completly in one afternoon. You know juste sitting (well more like lounging lazilly but...) on my couch and reading a great book. That helps particullary with a little cat with too much fur decide to keep you compagny with his constant purring. So in short a great afternoon far from the wories of my examen tuesdy, my money that gonna be short for the next few month and the fact that my friend hasn't called me back about his furniture I'm supposed to buy now that he is leaving me his appartement ;-)

Oh well, I'm sure I'll be able to talk to him soon or someday in the future.. I,ll get his e-mail at worse.

My cat doesn't want me to work tonight

As you have read I have to have done my predoc examen by tuesday. Now, the first part the written part is done but I also have an oral presentation to prepare.. and now something with 4 leg, a tail and cute little ears is trying to stop me from working on it! Bad cat! ;-) I'll manage but it's funny... oh and after taking a test apparently I'm the perfect man for a girl in Norway.

Friday, August 26, 2005

Well let's play the waiting game.

Here is what my situation is... there are for the doctorate a number of "award" for finishing certain part of the doctorat on time. One of those part is the pre-doc examen, which to get the 2000$ award I have to finish before............ wednesday, however to finish I have to correct all the spelling mystake in my two text as well as change what my director wants me to change and pray that my corrector aren't too pissed at having only 4 days to correct the thing before my presentation. Well I'm done with the first two part now I am only waiting for my supervisor husband to get the fuck back home so that my supervisor can get here and look at my work so that I can give them to my corrector and have a chance at the 2000$ award.

And yeah I really need it for my moving in a few weeks/months. GRRRR!!! I hate waiting...

On a not related at all note... I've missed my 200th post annoncement sorry ;-)

Thursday, August 25, 2005

No post today (irony post)

Sorry no post today, to busy a new deadline that should I miss it will cost me 2000$ for tomorrow morning. I'll give more detail tomorrow... thank for waiting for me.

Well reality TV is going no where fast now...

Well I really am not a fan of TV reality but this take the cake... frankly that is really pushing the concept to new low.

A reality show to get who will be a sperm donor... what next a reality show to find the man who will take the virginity of a 16 year old girl? The parodie of this show where the guy will compete but for an ugly 68 years old? A reality show where female contestant have to do the most disgusting sex act to stay on (this will will be called slut factor or something silly like that)? A show where win 1 millions dolloar if you can survive radiation exposure for the longest time?

I have always found reality TV to be basicaly voyeurism but this is getting crazy. I understand that there is a "primal" need for this in many people and I aknowledge that some people want to see and show that. But personnaly, it does nothing to me and I belive a relatively large segment of the population is with me so... just don't watch reality TV it will get canceled if enough people do that.

A Master in what?

I just saw an interesting poster about an opportunity to get what must be a very very interesting master degree.. but I do have some questions about it. It is a master degree in Modeling and simulating complex realities (yes realities).

First, realities? like there is more then one reality?

Second, complex? a complex reality as opposed to what our "simple" reality.

Third, how the hell can you model a reality different from our own? We can't even get a complete picture of our own... isn't that strange you know?

Fourth, simulating a reality... doesn't that sound weird... like a false reality isn't that a paradox.

Oh well it got my weird mind thinking so I decided to share it with you.... you can thank me :-p

Finally, I sign the lease for my next appartement.... got to move out now I have no other choice, still it feel great even if I am a little scared of my financial situation.
